Maca and Training: What Human Studies Have Explored

Maca is one of the root ingredients in AP Nootropic Pre-Workout. Our Sweet Peach serving includes 2,000 mg maca root extract, identified as Lepidium meyenii.

Human exercise studies make maca an interesting ingredient to explore, particularly when the preparation and comparison group stay visible beside the results.

A study involving elite athletes

Exploratory athlete study Black maca · Eight weeks
Fitness measures over time A 2023 study followed 44 elite athletes taking 5 g of black maca extract daily for 8 weeks. Researchers reported changes in selected fitness measures after supplementation, but the study had no control group. Study details and source linked above

Without a comparison group, the changes cannot be confidently separated from ongoing training or other influences. The authors identify that limitation. The trial also used a named black maca preparation at a different amount from our 2 g root extract.

A small cycling comparison

An earlier randomized crossover pilot studied eight trained male cyclists over 14-day supplementation periods. Cycling time improved compared with the starting test, but the post-supplementation result did not differ significantly from placebo.

That distinction is useful: improving from your own starting point is not the same as outperforming a comparison condition. Both studies offer questions for future research, without settling maca’s effect on a broad range of gym routines.

Our root ingredient profile

We include maca alongside 500 mg ashwagandha root extract and our mushroom extracts. Its 2,000 mg amount is listed individually, so you can see the ingredient’s place in the scoop.

Our panel identifies the plant and root material; it does not identify our maca as the black maca preparation from the athlete study. We therefore describe our product using its actual label details.

Connect the formula with a consistent routine

Maca is one part of a formula that also includes amino acids and 220 mg caffeine from guarana. When preparing for training, consider that complete serving alongside your food, water and session time.

For a strength program, keep track of exercises, sets and repetitions. For endurance work, distance and pace can help describe progress. Consistent records are more useful than assuming a change in one workout came from one root ingredient.
