Guarana Research for Training: Attention, Caffeine and Our Formula

Guarana is the botanical caffeine source in AP Nootropic Pre-Workout. We use 1,000 mg guarana seed extract standardized to 22% caffeine in each Sweet Peach serving. That supplies 220 mg caffeine.

Alongside its caffeine content, guarana has attracted research interest involving attention tasks. A human cycling study helps explain that connection with a training-focused formula.

What the researchers tested

Human crossover trial 25 participants · Guarana research
Attention around a cycling session In an acute crossover study involving 25 participants, researchers compared guarana, a caffeine-matched condition and placebo. The guarana preparation contained 4% caffeine and was given according to body mass; it differed from our 22% extract. Study details and source linked above

Participants completed cognitive assessments around a cycling session. Some reaction-time and alertness comparisons favored guarana over placebo, but did not establish superiority over matched caffeine. The experiment examined responses within individual testing sessions.

Why reaction time is an interesting question

A reaction-time task measures how quickly someone responds to a defined signal. It gives researchers a repeatable attention-related measure, but it is different from learning a lifting technique or following a workout program.

For AP LABS, that research provides context for discussing guarana in a nootropic pre-workout for training. It does not mean our formula has been shown to produce the same result, or that faster performance on one laboratory task guarantees a better gym session.

Our extract and its caffeine are two numbers

The 1,000 mg on our label is the guarana extract amount. Multiplying that by 22% gives 220 mg caffeine; the extract is not 1,000 mg of caffeine. Stating both numbers makes the ingredient easy to understand.

Our extract also sits within a wider formula, including 1,000 mg L-tyrosine, 500 mg lion’s mane fruiting body extract and 2,500 mg beta-alanine. Each ingredient has its own amount rather than being hidden within a single blend total.

Use the caffeine amount to plan the serving

The study examined cognitive responses around exercise; it did not measure caffeine absorption over time. Guarana remains a caffeine source, so include its 220 mg when considering other caffeinated drinks and the timing of your session.
